Born in Bangladesh, Shahriar Rahman “Shah” was raised in a mountain town in Saudi Arabia where he had little access to movies or TV. A son of two doctors, he moved to the US at age 15 to pursue medical studies. In college, however, he discovered the NYC indie movie scene and became hooked. Upon film school graduation, he was one of ten promising filmmakers selected for the Independent Feature Project’s Project Involve mentorship program.
As an experienced editor in his mid-twenties, Shah became Chief of Production at a 24-hour news and entertainment network in NYC. At STV, Shah was responsible for all content produced and had 28 full-time employees under his guidance. After moving to Los Angeles, Shah's first job was as a compositor on Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows Part 2. His TV credits include serving as a visual effects supervisor on such shows as Scandal (ABC), Justified (FX), How to Get Away with Murder (ABC), and Grace and Frankie (Netflix). He learned from notable showrunners Shonda Rhimes, Eric Kripke, Marta Kauffman, and Graham Yost. He has worked on set with directors Ava DuVernay, Michael Dinner, Julie Ann-Robinson, Tony Goldwyn, Regina King, and Allison Liddi-Brown.
Shah served as a VFX artist or supervisor, colorist, or finishing/beauty artist on 40 music videos featuring Eminem, Brittany Spears, Avicii, 21 Pilots, The Roots, Panic at the Disco, Sean Paul and Carrie Underwood. Fast Company magazine lauded his designs for Fitz of the Tantrum’s Out of My League as a glowing work of glitch art. Bruno Mars and The Weeknd employed Shah to design their concert video projections.
Shah’s numerous shorts have won various accolades such as MOFILM advertising finalist, Discover LA contest winner, 72-hour and 48-hour film contest finalist, and Vimeo Staff Pick. His feature Healing Life was selected for the South Asian International Film Festival and was sold for primetime holiday TV broadcast overseas.
Recently, Shah was selected as a director to watch in SHOOT’s New Director Search, class of 2024.
